Yoga is a Way of Life: How Yoga Changed my Life and How it can Transform Your Life too?

Practising yoga has been an inward journey for me for many years since my childhood. It’s my riyaaz (practice) that helps me travel to the core of my being and find that elusive balance within myself. In nutshell, yoga has been beyond mere physical exercising, and now it’s more the part of my life that connects me to a spiritual dimension that I never knew existed inside of me. So how yoga changed my life and what makes yoga such an intimate part of it? For me, yoga is a way of life and hopefully, after going through my reasons you may feel motivated to adopt yoga as your way of life too.

How yoga changed my life and how it can transform yours too?

Here are my top 5 reasons why yoga is a way of life and why you should adopt yoga in your lives too:

1. Yoga has a calming effect on my whole being

The hour that I take out for myself to stretch my body helps me to reconnect with all parts of me within me. That is – my physiological body, my mental state, my emotional state and my spiritual core. Isn’t it amazing that just being in the flow of asanas for an hour, one could get attuned to such finer elements within oneself?

2. It is the world’s best therapy

It is the world’s best therapy to create an alignment across all dimensions of one’s existence – your mind, heart, body and soul – How many times do we find ourselves dealing with incongruence in what we think, what we feel and what we do? Yoga is a great way to create that consistency amongst all these dimensions of one’s being. And when you do find that harmony within yourself, you will feel empowered and you will feel balanced. After all, balance isn’t just about nailing one-legged yoga postures, it is as much about orchestrating harmony within all of one’s life energies.

3. Yoga helps me discover the fluidity of movement

Yes, the asanas will indeed help your flexibility but somewhere in between stretching yourself, you will also see that the asanas will create a beautiful rhythm of movement within your body in a way that you never imagined your body could move. The extent of movement makes you realize that your bodies are capable of so much more beyond what you believed it could do for you. You develop body control, focus, endurance and balance – all of which adds to the aesthetics of movement of your body. Movement is sexy after all!

4.  Yoga helps you reach a meditative state

Pranayamas are essentially deep breathing exercises and one of the most beneficial aspects of these deep breathing exercises, such as Anulom Vilom, Brahmari, Sheetli, Sheetkari Pranayama; is that they help you get hold of your anxiety. They help you refocus on your body chemistry and stay in the moment. So when you find yourself being overpowered by a deluge of emotions causing you anxiety or sleeplessness or pain in any form, take a few moments to recentre your breathing and you will find that these Pranayamas will help you tune back to the reality of existence around you.

5. Yoga is an elixir of youth

And I do not mean in a superficial way such as the anti-ageing creams or botox. If you really live the yogic way of life with the practice of Pranayamas, asanas, pranic foods, deep sleep and a meditative state of mind; you will find that there will be a radiance on your face that perhaps emanates from the calmness within you. Your body will be agile and it will support you through all of your life challenges. There will be a healthy flow of blood and oxygen within your body which will create radiance on your face and a look of vitality. The asanas strengthen your body and work on your system from within. All of these benefits combined lead to a reversal of ageing which manifests in form of brighter skin, sharper digestive power, higher metabolism, muscular strength and a vibrant aura.

With all of these benefits, we highly recommend you to start small on your journey of yoga as a way of life. To do so, find yourself a competent guru or a master who can guide you on this path to physical, mental, emotional and spiritual liberation. If you are an athlete or a dancer, you will find that yoga will aid your performance goals. So buy yourself a yoga mat, grab your yoga pants and ride the yoga way of life!
